WATCH: Why Atheists Love to Hate Christmas

Pastor Jack Hibbs says atheists have no problem with Christmas. They still worship Santa Claus and give gifts and hang ornaments on their Christmas trees.

But Hibbs, the founder and lead pastor of Calvary Chapel Chino Hills in Chino Hills, California, says it’s the message of Christmas that has them up in arms. The fact that Jesus was born to die for their sins is a real problem for them, and they want no part of that because it makes them feel less invincible.

Atheist Christmas Screenshot “The pure and simple truth is that Christmas challenges the way people think and how they think,” Hibbs says. “What are we doing at Christmas if we’re not worshipping the Lord Jesus Christ? It’s a spiritual issue, and it’s all because of Jesus.

“The issue with it is in Luke 2. In verse 10, it says, ‘But the angel said to them, “Listen! Do not fear. For I bring you good news of great joy.”‘ Why anyone would have a problem with that is beyond me. Do you not want good tidings of great joy? Of course you do, everyone does.

“But where the story goes off the rails is the next verse, 11, where it says, ‘For unto you is born this day in the City of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord.’ Everything about that announcement is not volatile. It’s not just that He is Christ the Lord, the problem is that He is a Savior.

“You can give me a little stout man with black shoes coming to my door with a glued-on beard giving me gifts and eggnog; that’s not a problem. I’ll have a tree in my house; we’ll exchange gifts and go to Christmas parties. We’ll give cards to people, and that’s not a problem. But when you start to mention that it’s about Christ the Lord, a Savior, we have a problem because the very Christmas announcement suggests that mankind needs a Savior, and that’s an offense.”
