Watch: Inauguration of President Joe Biden, Vice President Kamala Harris

Today’s inauguration makes history after a much-contested election and as the inauguration many will remember for its unusual circumstances: mask-clad attendees, the Capitol under heavy surveillance by 25,000 National Guard troops and even a date that is a palindrome that won’t happen for another thousand years.

Highlights of the opening ceremony include:

— U.S. Senator Amy Klobuchar, D-Minn., encouraged Americans in this new season to go “forward as a nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.”

— Chair of the Inauguration Committee, Sen. Roy Blunt, R-Mo., called celebrating this event, even amid such unusual circumstances, “miraculous,” likening it to the inauguration during the Depression. He highlighted the Founding Father’s desire for their new democracy: that “always working together would be the hallmark of a great democracy.”

—Father Leo J. O’Donovan, Jesuit Catholic priest, theologian and former president of Georgetown University, presented the invocation. He said he desires to see all Americans “caring for one another in word and deed, especially for the least among us, so becoming a light for the world.”

O’Donovan concluded by reminding all listening to hold fast to the “joy that is overflow of love.”
