While much rhetoric around police brutality splashes across headlines, people across the country are ensuring those brave men and women are recognized as the valuable members of society they are. Without downplaying the severity of the issues, people across the country are taking this week to honor those risk their lives every day they go to work.

“In Florida, we stand behind our police officers who protect our freedoms and defend our society—putting themselves in harm’s way to keep our people safe and our businesses secure,” said Gov. Ron DeSantis. “This week we honor them for always responding to those in need.”

Days prior to the celebration, the Florida governor signed the Combating Public Disorder Act and awarded all Florida first responders a $1,000 bonus for their efforts during the pandemic.

Others are flocking to social media to share their love for law enforcement officers.

Elise Stefanik, a New York congresswoman, says she will always defend the police and “proudly #BacktheBlue.”

Tennessee Gov. Bill Lee concurred, highlighting his state’s first responders compassion and courage.

Congressman Lou Barletta of Pennsylvania says now more than ever, Americans must show their support for their law enforcement.

Watch this video from Attorney General Merrick B. Garland, who offers stirring words to commemorate National Police Week:

“We know that not a single day nor a single week is enough to recognize your service and sacrifice,” he told the Justice Department.

While official in-person events such as the Annual Candlelight Vigil were pushed to October 2021, virtual celebrations are scheduled throughout the week. Find information on how you can honor those who protect here. {eoa}
