A Florida teenager was fatally stabbed while protecting his 5-year-old sister from an intruder, his family says.
Police found 15-year-old Khyler Edman dead on Thursday, Sept. 26, in Port Charlotte.
Neighbors alerted authorities that an injured man was walking the streets, reports Law Enforcement Today. When police arrived, they found 27-year-old Ryan Cole with stab wounds on his hands and side. Police found that Cole had broken into a home. After canvassing the neighborhood, they came upon another home he had broken into. When they went inside, they discovered Edman’s body.
“A violent encounter ensued where we believe that teenager was trying to protect the home and protect their younger sibling,” says Charlotte County Sheriff Bill Prummell.
Officials found Edman’s young sister unharmed in the home.
A GoFundMe account has since raised over $34,000 for the Edman family.
One of Edman’s parents anonymously wrote that their son “lost his life being a hero protecting his 5-year-old sister … due to the senseless act of a stranger. My son had a long life ahead of him that was taken too soon.”
