Christian music legend and Gospel Music Hall of Fame inductee Mylon LeFevre, the front man for the popular band Broken Heart in the 1980s and 1990s, died Friday, Sept. 8, at the age of 78 after a long bout with cancer.

As a kid, LeFevre performed with his gospel-singing family. But after falling in love with secular rock ‘n’ roll, he went down a dark path to led to drug addiction. God retrieved him from that lifestyle and he began to make his mark in contemporary Christian music.

In 1980, LeFevre attended a concert by the CCM group 2nd Chapter of Acts. Buck Herring, the group’s leader, led the people in prayer, and LeFevre prayed along and submitted to Jesus as the Lord of his life.

In 1981, he started a Christian band called The Gathering Ground Band, but the next year, the group changed it’s name to Mylon and Broken Heart. Over the next 10 years, the group released 10 albums and traveled over a million miles.

In 1987, the band received a Rock Album of the Year GMA Dove Award for ‘Crack the Sky.’ That same year, they received a Grammy Award for Best Gospel Performance by a Duo, Group, Choir or Chorus.

Broken Mylon LeFevreHis wife, Christi, paid tribute to him on Facebook shortly after his death.

“My precious, strong and courageous husband laid hold of eternal life last night,” Christi said. “When we discussed heaven through the years, Mylon was most excited about receiving the soul winner’s crown. With his contemporary Christian rock band, Mylon and Broken Heart, he had the privilege of leading over 250,000 youth to Jesus. He cherished all the years of music ministry and the countless lives touched through his songs but his greatest joy was teaching the Word of God, especially through our broadcast, “On the Road to Freedom.”

“Throughout the last years of this intense non-stop battle, never once did I hear him falter in his good confession of faith. In every broadcast and church service, many witnesses can attest to his bold declaration: Jesus is my healer. Until his very last breath he fought the good fight of faith. He finished his race. He kept the faith. We discussed many times how we both daily answered the call for the holy affirmation that I know you are now hearing, ‘Well done good and faithful servant. Enter into the joy of your Lord.'”
