According to U.S. and Israeli leaders, Israel could declare sovereignty over the Jordan Valley, and parts of Judea and Samaria, in a matter of weeks. Just this week, the potential move was endorsed by U.S. Ambassador to Israel David Friedman, who said the U.S. expects Israel to apply sovereignty very soon.
With Israel’s unity government on the verge of being established, the question of sovereignty is being promoted as a top agenda for the new government. At the same time, the discussion has sparked outcries from right- and left-wing camps from all parts of the world.
Jewish and Christian leaders are on both sides of the spectrum, some claiming that it will damage U.S.-Israel relations. The Palestinian Authority has decried the move, saying it annuls any hope of a two-state solution being enacted.
