Proposed Law Would Require Public Colleges to Provide Free Abortions

The James Dobson Family Institute (JDFI) issues the following statement from James Gottry, Esq., vice president of public policy for the Dobson Policy Center, regarding New York Assembly Bill A8743, which would require public colleges in New York to offer free abortions on campus.

“Our public colleges and universities are intended to expose young men and women to new ideas, to sharpen their critical thinking skills, and, ultimately, to prepare them for productive careers. But at least one New York politician apparently believes that public institutions of higher learning should also serve as tax-funded abortion providers.

“State Assemblyman Harvey Epstein has introduced New York Assembly Bill 8743, which — if passed — would require every public college in New York to become first-trimester abortion providers by offering ‘abortion by medication techniques onsite.’ The bill would also create a ‘special fund’ designating taxpayer funds to pay for these abortions.

“With close to 100 abortion providers in New York, one might wonder why even the most hardened advocate of abortion would seek to bring this despicable business of death onto college campuses. But reports suggest Epstein believes students should not have to miss class ‘simply to get an abortion.’

“Our constitutional republic is a government of the people, by the people and for the people. If our representatives are unwilling to protect the most vulnerable among us, then it is time for us to replace them with men and women who will.

“Abortion ends the life of an unborn child. It irrevocably alters the lives of the child’s mother and father. And it wounds those who participate — whether willingly or unwillingly.

“If you are a citizen of New York state, please contact your representatives and demand that they kill this bill. For the rest of us, let’s steward our vote wisely and elect representatives who will respect and protect the sanctity of human life, from conception to natural death.”
