In 2014, Catholic Vote and its 600,000 members mobilized Roman Catholic voters, helping to secure a Republican Party majority in both chambers of Congress.

U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) hopes to mobilize them again in his quest to win the presidency. Thursday afternoon, the group announced it was more than happy to oblige.

"Catholics must unite around Ted Cruz now," the organization said in its official endorsement statement.

Catholic Vote's statement said Cruz is "far and away the best choice"—and the only "acceptable choice with a viable path"—to win both the Republican nomination this summer and the general election in November. The group noted his "consistent record" of supporting:

  • pro-life causes,
  • religious freedom, and
  • marriage.

"We knew at the outset of this process we could never support Hillary Clinton," the statement read. "It did not take us long to definitively conclude we could not support Donald Trump. The field is now clear enough for us to unambiguously support Ted Cruz."
