Rob Bell and his wife, Kristen, appeared on Oprah’s Super Soul Sunday, and reiterated their support for gay marriage across the church while promoting their new book, The Zimzum of Love: A New Way of Understanding Marriage

“Loneliness is not good for the world. Whoever you are, gay or straight, it is totally normal, natural and healthy to want someone to go through life with,” Rob Bell tells Oprah. It’s central to our humanity. We want someone to go on the journey with.”

He adds that the church is built on community and adhering to Scriptures is “irrelevant.”

“We’re moments away,” Rob Bell said. “I think culture is already there and the church will continue to be even more irrelevant when it quotes letters from 2,000 years ago as their best defense, when you have in front of you flesh-and-blood people who are your brothers and sisters and aunts and uncles and co-workers and neighbors and they love each other and just want to go through life with someone.”

“There are churches who are moving forward and there are churches who are almost regressing and making it more of a battle,”  Kristen Bell said.

The Bells explain their stance on same-sex marriage in Zimzum.

“The zimzum of love is for anyone—gay or straight—who believes the world needs more love and sacrifice and commitment and marriage. There’s a lot that’s broken and fractured in our world, and when two people love each [other] well, it creates space that isn’t broken but one, united, whole,” Rob Bell tells Religion News Service‘s Jonathan Merrit.

With so many denominations defying God’s Word on gay marriage, could Bell actually be right?
