Inner Guidance Directly From the Holy Spirit

Many people are enamored with the manifestations of the Holy Spirit such as prophecy and healings; but, there are ongoing effects of the Spirit in our everyday lives that are even more important but are not as appreciated. The Bible tells us that there is an inner guidance for us directly from God. It comes in the form of a spiritual discernment from the Holy Spirit when He is within us which affects every aspect of our lives.[1] This discernment is called the Mind of Christ. John the apostle calls it the anointing, and he tells us that it teaches us to the extent that we do not need any person to teach us. It also gives us an inside understanding of what is contained in Scripture; otherwise, we are approaching it as outsiders, which is a disadvantage. The Holy Spirit takes from Jesus and gives it to us, and also brings to our remembrance what we learn from Scripture. This is how we can “Prove all things; hold fast that which is good.”[2]

We have a responsibility to use this discernment. It doesn’t come only from accumulating knowledge of Scripture. It is an aspect of the redeemed heart. When we have the Holy Spirit within us, Christ’s teachings are within in our hearts. The will of God is written in our hearts. [3] There are times when we don’t have to premeditate an answer that we give to others because it will be provided for us by the Holy Spirit when we speak. All of this is a part of the new covenant that was spoken of in the Old Testament where Ezekiel says: “A new heart also will I give you, and a new spirit will I put within you: and I will take away the stony heart out of your flesh, and I will give you a heart of flesh. And I will put my spirit within you, and cause you to walk in my statutes, and ye shall keep my judgments, and do them.”[4]

Our righteousness does not come from obeying rules and regulations. It comes from the Spirit which enables us to no longer be enslaved to sin: and we will not want to return to its slavery. This freedom is not a freedom to sin: it is a freedom from sin. We don’t just avoid sin by trying to use our willpower; we also need to walk in the Spirit in order to be strengthened against sin. When we are under the influence of the Spirit, all things become new.[5]

Jesus told us that we need to know both the Scriptures and the power of God.[6] Much of today’s Christianity doesn’t arrive at this place because it has settled for a form of godliness, and has rejected its power because it has rejected the means for arriving at this power.[7] Christianity has substituted spiritual practices that are better suited for other forms of religion. Being lifted to a place of power over sin requires humility toward God which brings us this grace.[8] This type of humility is something that is seldom taught. It brings us the Holy Spirit that enables us to walk in the Spirit and experience its fruits which include inner peace and strength for overcoming lust.[9] This is how we experience the power for obtaining victory over sin. Grace only flows into us when God is within us. We are under God’s greatest influence when we yield to Him.

The peace that we experience from unconditional trust in God ensures that our decisions are in line with the will of God.[10] When our minds are unmoored from the Spirit, and invariably agitated, we receive the least amount of guidance from God. The peace of God keeps us in Christ Jesus and into the rest for our souls that He promised us when we come to Him and learn of His humility toward the Father.[11]

When peace was my primary pursuit, and I was curious as to whether Christianity had any teaching on this, I started looking in the Bible and noticed that there was a lot of teaching on peace that I was not aware of. The verses that addressed it in the Bible had a discernible pattern. They spoke of unconditional trust in God. I eventually acted on them and received what was promised: and even more than I had expected. I have found that most of later Christian writings are not as pointed as the Bible is in this regard. The simple act of unconditional trust in God or surrender is often presented in ways that obstruct it.

When we seek anything from the Holy Spirit, we are also seeking the Holy Spirit because it is His presence within us that imparts it. This is why the same passages in the Bible instruct us on how to receive both. This is especially true of inner peace from God.[12]
