Politics is oftentimes a very sordid activity, but the comments made by one presidential candidate’s spouse about former U.S. Sen. Rick Santorum (R-PA) have dropped quite a few jaws and forced him to hit the airwaves in response Monday evening.

Santorum made the rounds with Hugh Hewitt, Tony Perkins, Lars Larson, and Mark Levin to counter allegations made by former President Bill Clinton, the husband of Democrat front-runner Hillary Clinton. According to Bill Clinton’s biographer, Taylor Branch, the former president believes Santorum and his wife elected to abort their son Gabriel.

In 1996, Gabriel was diagnosed with a fatal defect and Santorum’s wife, Karen, underwent intrauterine surgery with the hope of correcting the problem. The surgery was successful, but several days later, Karen developed an infection that triggered a premature birth.

Gabriel died two hours later in his parents’ arms.

Karen Santorum went on to write a best-selling book, “Letters to Gabriel,” which detailed their son’s life and their family’s pain. As a result, the Santorum family received hundreds of letters describing how their struggles helped others deal with similar pain.

Bill Clinton’s comments were made during interviews that Branch, a longtime Clinton friend, conducted with the president during his time in the White House for a book he later wrote. According to The Washington Free Beacon, which first reported on the recordings last week, the statements were made in May of 1997.

Santorum was scheduled to appear on several other radio programs Tuesday, as well. These include: “Breitbart News Daily” with Steve Bannon on SiriusXM Patriot Radio, Bill Bennett’s “Morning in America Show,” the “Dom Giordano Show” on WPHT-AM in Philadelphia and “The John Gibson Show” on FOX News Radio.
