Hey #NeverTrumpers: We Have to Elect Donald Trump to Have Something Worth Fighting Over

Those alleged conservatives who remain #NeverTrump would do well the read Paul Bedard’s article “FEC commissioner warns Dems are gunning for conservative media” in The Washington Examiner.

Bedard, one of D.C.’s most respected conservative journalists, reports that Federal Election Commission Republican Lee E. Goodman warned Wednesday that liberals are moving aggressively to “amend the First Amendment” so that conservatives are silenced and businesses are chased “out of the democracy.”

According to Bedard’s reporting, Commissioner Lee E. Goodman said that the attack started once the Tea Party changed American politics in the 2010 election and now dominates the politics of the Left.

“It has triggered a very aggressive movement by people to amend the First Amendment, left intellectuals have placed it on the table,” Goodman said on Boston’s Howie Carr show.

“The general tenor of the Left in American politics today has certainly spoken out against First Amendment rights. It has been a reversal over the last 50 years,” he added, citing FDR Democrats who defended socialists and communists.

From trying to reverse the Citizens United decision to using the IRS to kill Tea Party groups, Goodman said that the Democrats have moved to change free speech in the country, according to Bedard’s article.

“It’s now the left attacking conservative speakers, like free market speech because they are concerned that the big corporations might convince somebody, they might speak about free market economics,” he said, adding that liberals want to “chase them out of the democracy.”

Democrats on the FEC have led the attacks, publicly calling for reversal of Citizens United and even for regulating conservative news sites like the Drudge Report and by extension, conservativehq.com.

The Democrats on the Supreme Court, we can hardly call these Far Left political operatives justices, have all spoken out in favor of overturning Citizens United, which most people seem to forget was a case about Hillary Clinton trying to regulate free speech.

Hillary Clinton has called for overturning the Citizens United Supreme Court decision by either amending the Constitution or the appointment of new justices to the Supreme Court.

And if Clinton is elected president they will have not just the unimpeded ability to pursue that agenda, but the active encouragement of the president to do so.

#NeverTrumpers seem to forget that Clinton’s hostility toward this fundamental freedom could be put into practice by her appointments not only to the Supreme Court, but also to the Internal Revenue Service, Federal Communications Commission, and the Justice Department.

The IRS could, as it has done before, audit political enemies while delaying or denying nonprofit status for conservative organizations.

The FCC could restore the Fairness Doctrine and enforce it in a partisan manner, rejecting appeals from conservatives while routinely approving those from liberals.

The Justice Department could follow the example of liberal state attorneys general who are trying to turn political speech on climate matters into prosecutable “fraud.”

The Federal Elections Commission, as Commissioner Goodman has noted with alarm, is another potential threat to freedom.

Although custom requires the president to nominate half of the commissioners by following the recommendations of the opposition party’s congressional leaders, the letter of the law has no such requirement and the Supreme Court has ruled that the President has full power to choose nominees.  Clinton has publicly complained that “We’ve got a Federal Elections Commission that is paralyzed because Republicans won’t enforce the laws … .”

#NeverTrump Republicans should consider that, in pursuit of her goal of overturning Citizens United and limiting the speech of her opponents, Hillary Clinton could very well ignore custom and appoint three partisan Democrats and three liberal “Republicans” or even three left-wing independents. Recess appointments could be made if the Senate refused to confirm.

The FEC could then follow a heavily partisan course, even to the extent of prosecutions of Clinton’s Republican and conservative opponents and making the #NeverTrumpers’ dream of a post-Trump rebuilding of the Republican Party with them in charge unlikely if not impossible.
