Sitting Vice President Mike Pence will speak at Lee University later this month.

Pence will be on the Cleveland, Tennessee, campus to address how the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act will impact individuals, the state and the nation.

The event is hosted by America First Policies and will be held in Pangle Hall on campus.

Though the announcement drew some criticism, others were happy to see how the Church of God-affiliated school has risen to prominence. Choir members from Lee sang at President Barack Obama’s inauguration in 2012. The school’s talented alumni have also appeared on many singing competitions like American Idol and The Voice.

“As a Lee alumnus, I am proud that a tiny Bible school has grown to the place that it can host an event for a sitting Republican vice president. It is the same pride I felt when students from this same formerly tiny Bible School sang at the inauguration of a Democrat President in 2012,” one person commented on the announcement. “People who are upset are missing the point, God is favoring Lee to be a light to the United States, and shining the light of Christ goes beyond politics into the eternal in its significance.”

Another said: “Politics aside, it’s pretty cool when a sitting VP comes to Lee. It’s an honor to have the office of vice president come and speak. I wasn’t the biggest fan of President Obama, but I thought it was a big honor and pretty freaking cool for our choir to be a part of his inauguration. It’s the same thing here.”
