Michele Bachmann Poised for Re-Election

GOP firebrand Rep. Michele Bachmann appeared to be squeaking out a victory over DFL businessman Jim Graves in a race that is so close it could be heading for a recount.

Early Wednesday, the Associated Press called the race for Bachmann, after she led by slightly more than 1 percentage point with 98 percent of the precincts reporting.

That margin would put the race outside the range for an automatic recount, but Graves could still seek and pay for one.

“It looks very much like it’ll be a recount,” Graves told supporters in St. Cloud early Wednesday, hours before Bachmann’s lead widened from nearly 1,000 votes to about 3,700 and the AP declared her the winner.

While the Associated Press called the race for Bachmann, both campaigns planned to monitor continuing election results through the early morning hours and make public statements later in the day.
