That Christian Clerk Won’t Have to Perform a Gay ‘Wedding’ – for Now

Federal Court Judge David Bunning granted a temporary stay for the purpose of allowing Kim Davis to request a stay pending the appeal from the Court of Appeals. Liberty Counsel will now file a stay request in the Court of Appeals to protect Kim from additional adverse consequences for following her faith until after the court hears her appeal. After Kim Davis refused, based on her religious conviction, to issue marriage licenses for same-sex marriage, she was sued by the ACLU. After two days of hearings, Judge Bunning ordered Davis to issue the licenses. He said she can attend church twice a week and believe what she wants, but she must issue the licenses. “To issue a license for same-sex marriage violates the core of Kim Davis’s Christian beliefs. This is not tangential to her beliefs but rather amounts to open disobedience to God. There are alternative ways to accommodate the religious conviction of Kim Davis, and that is what we will ask the Court of Appeals to consider,” said Mat Staver, Founder and Chairman of Liberty Counsel. The Court of Appeals should soon rule on the motion to stay the order pending appeal. The underlying appeal could takes months to decide.
