President-Elect Donald Trump

You might have seen the headline Tuesday morning that former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton’s popular vote lead over President-elect Donald Trump had grown to a historic 1.7 million votes.

According to the state-by-state vote counts currently being reported, that’s not even close to correct. As the old saying goes, “Numbers don’t lie,” so here several to share with friends and family:

  • 3 — The number of states in which former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton failed to win a single county-equivalent precinct (Alaska, Oklahoma and West Virginia).
  • 7 — The number of state governments that remain entirely in Democratic Party control (governorship and legislature).
  • 13 — The number of state legislatures controlled by Democrats.
  • 15 — the number of governorships held by Democrats.
  • 20 — the number of states won by former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton (she also won the District of Columbia).
  • 26 — The number of state governments that are entirely in Republican Party control (governorship and legislature).
  • 30 — the number of states won by President-elect Donald Trump.
  • 32 — The number of state legislatures controlled by Republicans.
  • 34 — The number of governorships now held by Republicans (technically, Alaska’s Gov. Bill Walker is an independent, but until two years ago was a lifelong Republican).
  • 232 — The number of electoral votes former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton won (ranks fifth all-time for a presidential runner-up).
  • 306 — The number of electoral votes President-elect Donald Trump won (ranks 22nd all-time for an elected president).
  • 466 — The number of county-equivalent precincts in the U.S. won by former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton (14.83 percent of the total).
  • 2,677 — The number of county-equivalent precincts in the U.S. won by President-Elect Donald Trump (85.17 percent of the total).
  • 2,687* — Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton’s smallest state margin of victory, in New Hampshire.
  • 3,180 — The number of Democratic state legislators in the U.S.
  • 4,164 — The number of Republican state legislators in the U.S.
  • 13,107* — President-elect Donald Trump’s smallest state margin of victory, in Michigan.
  • 813,773* — President-elect Donald Trump’s largest state margin of victory, in Texas.
  • 865,356* — The number of popular votes by which former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton currently leads President-elect Donald Trump (as of this writing).
  • 2,039,170* — The number of popular votes by which President-elect Donald Trump would be leading former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton if California votes were excluded from the totals.
  • 2,904,526* — Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton’s largest state margin of victory, in California.

* Disclaimer: Although several states have yet to certify their official vote tallies, any changes or unlikely to change the overall outcome by more than 0.01 of a percentage point.
