History records invasions of countries that caught citizens unprepared and resulted in devastating consequences lingering for lifetimes. My father came from Poland and knew how his country was one such victim.
On Sept. 1, 1939, at 4:45 AM, Hitler’s once Democrat Socialist Workers Party that morphed into Nazism, launched their blitzkrieg (“lightning war”) on an unprepared Poland. A total of 1.5 million troops stormed the nation by land, air and sea.
The Polish people were overwhelmed. German tanks steamrolled into the country; the Luftwaffe bombarded homes, trains and mowed down Poles with vicious staccato machine gun fire. Cities were torched as mothers and children screamed hysterically. In a month, Poland fell as Hitler gleefully celebrated victory and World War II exploded with its death and destruction. {eoa}
