Missionary: Japan Tsunami Worse than 2004 Disaster

After a miraculous set of miracles that provided a private jet to fly to Japan, Missionary Joe Hurston is on the ground with 11 water purifiers to help a few of the several million people who have no water as a result of Friday’s earthquake and tsunami.

“Tell people to pray,” he told Charisma as a was leaving the U.S. Sunday.  “This is as bad or worse than the 2004 tsunami. I’ve been in lots of disasters and have seen nothing this bad. Pray continually for wisdom and direction. There are a lot of concerns about radiation. It’s an unfolding story but this is serious stuff. If on of those nuclear plants blows it will harm everything within 150 miles.”

Hurston, who recently appeared on ABC’s Extreme Makeover Home Edition, is speaking of the 2004 tsunami in the Indian Ocean. According to the U.S. Geological Survey, the earthquake that preceded the tsunami released the energy of about 23,000 Hiroshima-style atomic bombs. The Indian Ocean tsunami is thought to be the most destructive in world history. It damaged 13 countries, including Indonesia, Sri Lanka, India, Thailand, Myanmar, Malaysia, The Maldives and  Somalia. At least 226,000 were killed.

Hurston had built the 11 water purifiers to take to Haiti. Each one costs about $2,000 and is portable so they can help people with no access to bigger water purifiers. Each one will serve about 500 people. Over the years his ministry has placed 751 such portable water purifiers (which a friend of his invented) in 40 countries.  He made an executive decision to take the water purifiers for Haiti and redirect them to Japan because of the disaster.

An 88-year-old benefactor felt moved to donate his Gulfstream G-IV airplane to fly to Florida from the northeast to get Hurston and several others, including George Thomas of CBN News, and fly them to Tokyo.
