A company in United Arab Emirates has made an implanted microchip that allows a person to make payments with the swipe of the hand.

Rashed Majed Al Abbar, vice-president for consumer product innovation at Etisalat, told Gulf News the chip is secure and tamper-proof. It stores the user’s information and can also be used to track a person and hold complex medical data.

The chip uses NFC (near field communications) technology and is more secure than RFID (radio-frequency identification) technology.

The chip will be able to store IDs, passwords, PINs, e-wallets and credit or debit cards. It will be able to unlock doors or turn off lights.

Etisalat says the implant will be available within four to six months and will cost less than $150.

The company will also market a wearable ring that offers the same functions.
