A teen was walking home from Bible study when he was struck and killed by a train this week.

De’vante Moore, 18, was crossing a darkened area of the tracks where there were no lights to signal the train’s coming. His brother and sister were behind him, but not on the tracks at the time of the incident. The family lives in LaPlace, Louisiana, between Baton Rouge and New Orleans.

“The first thing I said was no, that can’t be. He just left the church, how could something like that happen so quickly?” St. John the Baptist Parish Pastor Donald August says.

A Fox affiliate reports Moore had attended the church for about five years and was a regular face at the Bible study as well as other church activities.

“He had some very interesting statements and topics that he brought up. Some very interesting statements that he made, but it was all in good humor and I think he really enjoyed the class we had,” August says.

Moore’s mother, Samantha, says the teen had applied for a job Monday, just hours before he was killed.

Samantha says in one of their last conversations on the phone that day, he said “I love you,” and she responded, “I love you more.”
