David Berkowitz, better known as the mass murderer “Son of Sam,” may not have found the forgiveness of man—but he’s convinced he has the forgiveness of Jesus.

The serial killer made news headlines this week when he was denied parole yet again. He was so sure he wouldn’t be set free that he didn’t even attend the hearing.

Berkowitz’s lawyer, Mark J. Heller, told the New York Post’s Page Six that the notorious criminal, also known as the .44 Caliber Killer, has become a born-again Jew for Jesus.

“David told me that the reason he has never sought freedom from the parole board by attending parole hearings is because ‘Jesus has already freed my heart, soul and mind and has forgiven me,’” Heller told Page Six.

Berkowitz committed a series of shootings starting in the summer of 1976 with a .44 caliber Bulldog revolver. The killing spree spanned the course of a year and left six people dead and seven others wounded.

A bold killer, Berkowitz left behind letters promising more murders for police to find. He once claimed, but later recanted, that he was part of a satanic cult that carried out the murders as part of a ritual.

Berkowitz is serving six consecutive life sentences.
