Jimmy Carter: Zimmerman Acquittal Correct

Everyone seems to have an opinion on last weekend’s not-guilty verdict in the George Zimmerman-Trayvon Martin case. Former President Jimmy Carter is no different, but his comments on the subject may surprise many, considering his far-left stance on others.

Carter said he believes the jury was correct in acquitting Zimmerman of second-degree murder.

“I think the jury made the right decision based on the evidence presented,” Carter told WXIA in Atlanta. “The prosecution inadvertently set the standard so high that the jury had to be convinced that it was a deliberate act by Zimmerman, that he was not at all defending himself and so forth. It’s not a moral question; it’s a legal question, and the American law requires that the jury listens to the evidence presented.”

The case has sparked a national debate about racing profiling. But Carter didn’t fault the six-person jury, consisting of all women, of racism.

“I can’t allege the six jurors … are not just as sensitive about the race issue as I am or you are,” he said. “I would presume they listened to the evidence.”

Carter isn’t the only celebrity that has chimed in on the Zimmerman verdict. NewsBusters.org reports that, during a concert in Ireland, rock superstar Bruce Springsteen dedicated a song to Martin, saying it was “for justice for Trayvon Martin.”
