In a recent development at the Iowa Statehouse, a holiday display set up by the Satanic Temple has stirred controversy among many communities. The display, featuring a ram’s head covered with mirrors on a mannequin cloaked in red clothing, has been defended by the group’s co-founder, Lucien Greaves, as a symbol of their right to religious freedom.

Greaves argued that the display is necessary as “We don’t have a church on every street corner,” emphasizing their desire to be represented in a public forum. He also suggested that those who do not like the display should simply ignore it.

However, many Christians like Shellie Flockhart from Dallas Center have expressed shock and concern, calling the display “a very dark, evil force.” In response, a prayer group was organized on Wednesday, Dec. 6 around the Christmas tree in the center of the rotunda to spiritually oppose the display.

Flockhart emphasized the importance of spiritual warfare, stating, “I hope that people realize spiritual warfare is real. That there are evil satanic forces that are trying to infiltrate our state.” This sentiment is echoed by many in the Christian community, who see the display as an affront to America’s beliefs and values.

The Satanic Temple claims to be a federally recognized non-theistic group that uses satanic symbols as a way to convey its message. The group’s website states that they do not worship Satan or believe in the existence of Satan. The display is expected to remain at the Statehouse for 14 days.

The Bible warns of the dangers of allowing spiritual darkness into our lives. Ephesians 6:12 states, “For our fight is not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, and against spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places.” Allowing displays like the one at the Iowa Statehouse is an open invitation for such darkness to enter our society.

However, Christians can take heart in the victory over Satan that Jesus achieved in His death, burial and Resurrection. As 1 John 3:8 says, “For this purpose the Son of God was revealed, that He might destroy the works of the devil.” Through the power of the Holy Spirit, Christians have the same power to overcome spiritual darkness and stand firm in their faith.

The Iowa Statehouse’s display has ignited another debate about religious freedom and the role of spiritual darkness in our society. While the Satanic Temple asserts its right to be represented in a public forum, Christians are reminded of the importance of spiritual warfare and the victory that Jesus has already won on their behalf.{eoa}
