Franklin Graham Calls CNN Columnist to the Carpet

Stephanie Coontz has plenty of credentials—and plenty of opinions. She teaches at the Evergreen State College in Olympia, Washington. She is also director of research and public education at the Council on Contemporary Families and author of “Marriage, a History: How Love Conquered Marriage.”

But evangelist Franklin Graham is not impressed with her credentials—or her opinions. Coontz penned a column titled “Now who’s the moral majority?” on CNN Monday and suggested that pro-Christian politicians “better adjust to the new reality.”

What is that new reality?

“America has crossed a threshold where it is no longer a good business model or political strategy to be intolerant of diversity, whether that pertains to race, ethnicity, gender or sexual orientation. Since 2011, the majority of children that have been born in the United States each year are members of racial or ethnic minorities. Hispanics are projected to account for most of the growth in the labor force between now and 2060,” she writes.

“Women now lead men in educational attainment. And more than half of Americans live in states where same-sex marriage is legal. Business leaders and politicians who ignore or offend these constituencies do so at their own peril.”

Was that a threat? Sure sounds like one. So did the reactions from Wal-Mart, Apple, Angie’s List and other companies in response to Gov. Mike Pence’s religious freedom bill. The reality is, no one is discriminating against anyone with these bills. The point is, Christians should not be bullied with threats and boycotts into to violating their beliefs to cater to another’s beliefs. Religious liberty is written into our Constitution.

“Now who’s the moral majority? This headline was plastered across CNN’s website [Monday]. Claiming victory in the attempt to bully the American people into fully embracing the homosexual lifestyle, the op-ed says Bible-believing Christians and traditional Americans ‘had better adjust to a new reality,'” Graham wrote on his Facebook page.

Graham also pointed to Centers for Disease Control figures that determined less than 2 percent of the U.S. population identified as homosexual in 2014 and bluntly asked: Where is the majority in that?

“But they are intent on trying to force the true majority into silence—they want us to just sit down and be quiet. Even if the majority of Americans did support gay marriage, God’s Word doesn’t need a majority vote,” Graham said. “God’s Word is true regardless of the winds of moral change, and we must stand up for biblical truth in the midst of a depraved society.”
