The discovery of mislabeled Bibles at a Costco store in California recently set off a social media uproar.

Caleb Kaltenbach, a pastor at Discovery Church in Simi Valley, Calif., was recently shopping at Costco for a gift when he decided to stop and look at the Bibles. He says that what he saw shocked him.

“It was labeled fiction,” he said. “And it stuck out to me because I’ve never seen a Bible labeled fiction.”

The Discovery Church pastor snapped this picture and posted it on Twitter for his followers to view. It didn’t take long for the photo to get national attention.

“The picture went viral and here we are today,” Kaltenbach said.

Tweets started to come in from both sides, with people alternately blasting and supporting Costco.

One woman tweeted, “Labeling the Bible as fiction is insulting. If they had labeled the Koran fiction, libs would be furious.”

But another person said, “Is it not fiction? I think Costco has this correct. Please provide factual data to support otherwise.”

Costco has since apologized for labeling the Bibles in the Simi Valley store as fiction, calling it an error they are working quickly to correct.

“Our CEO is a devout Catholic. He obviously loves the Lord,” Costco employee Dusty Groves said. “This isn’t something he is purposely trying to do. It was a mistake.”

Kaltenbach says the error was very telling.

“I totally believe them,” he said. “I believe it was a mistake. I don’t believe there’s some kind of evil genius behind the scenes, but I do believe it is telling where our nation is spiritually.”
