Conservative Christian Leaders Focus on Romney’s Policy Over Mormonism

Dozens of Christian conservatives are working to shift the focus from Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney’s Mormon faith toward the GOP’s new national platform.

A group sent a letter to Romney last week admitting that “some have tempered their enthusiasm for sound government principles by their concern over differences in a candidate’s theological doctrine. It is time to remind ourselves that civil government is not about a particular theology, but rather about public policy, and the question we ask is this one: what are the policy principles that will govern your administration should you prevail on election day.”

The late Jerry Falwell’s two sons, along with anti-abortion activist Rev. Frank Pavone and GOP strategist Ralph Reed, Family Research Council president Tony Perkins and Samaritan’s Purse president Franklin Graham, were among the signatories on the letter. Twenty-eight people in all signed the letter, which concludes that the principles of the GOP’s platform are “squarely within Judeo-Christian tradition.”

“From our perspective as leaders who are motivated by Christian faith, it is a remarkably strong document and we congratulate you for it,” the letter said. “On those matters of social policy that address our deepest concerns—the sanctity of human life, compassion for the downtrodden and persecuted, the identity of the family, and religious freedom, the Republican platform speaks clearly and powerfully.”
