Newsom Pays the Price for California Church Restrictions
One year after Liberty Counsel filed the lawsuit on behalf of Harvest Rock Church and Harvest International Ministry against California Gov. Gavin Newsom, the full and final settlement of $1,350,000 was paid Thursday.
On May 17, 2021, the federal district court approved the first statewide permanent injunction in the country against COVID restrictions on churches and places of worship. Under the statewide permanent injunction, all California churches may hold worship without discriminatory restrictions. California was ordered to pay $1,350,000 for attorney’s fees and costs.
The money will be used by Liberty Counsel to continue litigation on behalf of other churches against COVID restrictions, including a case pending at the Supreme Court. A portion of the payment also will be used to pay off the mortgage on Liberty Counsel’s ministry center in Washington, D.C., which hosts many Bible studies and various religious gatherings. Ironically, the payment from California, which had the worst COVID restrictions on churches and places of worship, will be used to advance Bible studies and worship in the nation’s capital.

On Monday, July 12, the Israel Antiquities Authority announced the discovery of a unique piece of pottery dating from 3,100 years ago with a famous biblical name written in ink.
The jar handle was discovered in a storage pit in the ground in Khirbet el-Rai—the possible location of “Ziklag”—and bears Gideon’s nickname of “Jerubbaal,” which is first mentioned in Judges 6.
