Christian author and historian Peter Marshall died Wednesday evening after suffering a massive heart attack at a gym in Orleans, Mass. He was 70.

The son of the late U.S. Senate Chaplain Peter Marshall and author Catherine Marshall, he was known for his writing on America’s Christian heritage, including the best-selling books The Light and the Glory, From Sea to Shining Sea and Sounding Forth the Trumpet.

A graduate of Yale University and Princeton Theological Seminary, Marshall served as a pastor in the Presbyterian Church USA for 12 years before devoting himself to teaching and writing in 1977. In recent years his ministry focused on returning the U.S. to its Christian roots and encouraging national prayer and repentance.

Marshall’s father was one of the nation’s most popular ministers and was twice appointed a U.S. Senate chaplain before his untimely death in 1947 at age 46. His mother wrote a well-known biography of her husband, A Man Called Peter, which was made into an Oscar-nominated film in 1955. She was also the author of the best-selling novel Christy.

Funeral services were to be held Monday in Orleans, Mass. A memorial broadcast will be streamed live Sept. 19 at 5 p.m. Eastern at wezeradio.com.

Marshall is survived by his three children, Mary Elizabeth Marshall, Peter Jonathan Marshall, and David Christopher Marshall; two stepbrothers, Chester LeSourd and Jeffrey LeSourd; a stepsister, Linda LeSourd Lader; and three grandchildren.
