Liberty University student Cade Foehner sailed into the top 10 on ABC’s American Idol reboot.

“Other contestants on the show, when they found out I am studying biblical theology, they started coming up to me and sitting with me during breakfast and asking me different questions about it,” Foehner, who takes his classes online, says. “Without my schooling at Liberty, I wouldn’t have the answers for them.”

He continues: “To me, Liberty online was an obvious choice for a school. A lot of the pastors I know around here have gone to Liberty, and I love being able to dive in-depth with Scripture. It doesn’t even feel like I’m going to class; the work I do is the stuff I want to do.”

After his rendition of Gary Clark Jr.’s “Bright Lights” this week, some media predicted he would be left in the final round.

Liam Mathews of TV Guide writes: “He has killer ’70s-influenced style and is a dual threat, able to sing like Robert Plant and play guitar like Jimmy Page (in terms of style. He’s not a one-man Led Zeppelin). And though American Idol is doing what it can to break the cycle of polite Southern white boys winning, it ultimately comes down to the popular vote, and Cade fits the profile of the type of guy America likes.”

But what does Foehner like?

John Piper, according to his Twitter account. Stacked between tweets about Idol, thanking judges and sharing performances, Foehner retweets the theologian quite a bit.

His fans love his platform.
