Atheist Mistakes Roommate for Jesus, Attacks Him and Demands Godless Lawyer

In Florida, self-proclaimed atheist Gustav Pothoff, 51, doesn’t seem to be too good at recognizing people.

That’s because apparently his roommate, Raymond Hernandez, looked enough like Jesus Christ for Pothoff to attack him—according to police—with a glass cup and butter knife.

Now Pothoff is claiming he has a right to a court-appointed attorney who shares his godless views, according to a local news source. But the judge isn’t buying it, saying that Pothoff has to pay for his own lawyer if he insists on finding someone like-minded.

Pothoff was arrested Monday and charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, according to the Huffington Post.

The police officer at the scene of the incident reported:

“Raymond continued to tell me he got up from the couch to get a drink out of the kitchen, when all of a sudden Gustav picked up a glass cup and threw it at him. Raymond told me he quickly had to move so he did not get hit with the glass cup. After Gustav threw the glass cup at Raymond, Raymond stated the glass cup hit the ground and broke. Raymond further said Gustav then picked up a silver knife and threw that at him. When Gustav threw the items at Raymond, Raymond further said Gustav was talking about he was Jesus and wanted to kill him. Raymond frantically ran outside and called 911. Raymond stated he was scared that if the glass or knife hit him he was going to be injured.”

The police report goes on to describe Gustav’s story changing several times, though each time the atheist neglected to mention anything having to do with Jesus.
