President Obama and his family began their Easter in a church where the pastor used his sermon to blast political conservatives.

Luis Leon, pastor of St. John’s Church in D.C.’s Lafayette Square, accused the religious right of calling for “blacks to be back in the back of the bus, for women to be back in the kitchen, for gays to be in the closet and for immigrants to be on their side of the border.”

Leon also delivered the prayer at the president’s inauguration in January. He replaced the Rev. Louie Giglio, who declined the invitation after some objections from people who were concerned that he preached against homosexuality in the 1990s.

St. John’s is an Episcopal church. The denomination accepts gay marriage and ordains gay clergy.
