Why the Church Must Embrace the Mystery of Healing

Spirit-filled Pastor Bob Sawvelle says that while the church generally dislikes theological tension, the Bible is full of tensions and mysteries in the kingdom of God. And that includes the concept of divine healing.

While some in the church discount the notion that God still heals today, Sawvelle, founder and senior pastor of Passion Church in Tucson, Arizona, is a firm believer in God’s healing power. But he also believes healing is a paradox, and that while many receive physical, emotional and mental healing this side of eternity, not everyone will.

“It is a mystery, but it does not nullify the goodness of God or His healing nature,” Sawvelle said on a recent episode of “Charisma Connection” on the Charisma Podcast Network. “While God is a healer, not all will be healed. It’s just like salvation. God’s desire is that all will be saved or reconciled to Him through Christ’s atoning work on the cross, yet not all will receive God’s free gift of grace and be saved.

“The fact that not all are healed does not disprove that God is a healer or that He still heals today in the church. Rather than attempting to explain why people are not healed, we should embrace the mystery of healing and affirm our love for, and trust in, God.

“We should also celebrate the healings and miracles that are observed, recognizing that we serve a loving God who is still healing many today through the power of the cross and the ascension of Christ. God still performs miracles, yet for reasons we do not fully understand this side of heaven, not all will be healed.”
