How to Slow Down and Discern God’s Will for Your Life

Texas businessman Terry Looper once deluded himself into believing he knew God’s will for his life. That is, until a mental breakdown opened his eyes to what God and the Holy Spirit had in store for him—that it was about much more than just making money.

“I thought I was a Christian because I was doing all the right things,” Looper told Dr. Steve Greene on a recent episode of “Greenelines” on the Charisma Podcast Network. “I wasn’t a bad husband. I wasn’t a bad father. But for me, it was just about business and money, and that was just way too high of a priority for my life.

“But then I hit the proverbial wall; my brain just quit. I got on my knees, and I cried and said, ‘Lord, please take control of my life.’ I was in major fear at that moment, but the Holy Spirit took hold of my heart, and I watched as he unfolded a rhythm in my life that taught me more than I ever thought I could learn. He showed me that he wanted me to slow down.

“He gave me four action steps, and when I started employing them, my life got so much better. The first is prayer, consulting Jesus. … The second is gathering facts, not your opinions. … The third is to watch your circumstances and pay attention to the ones Jesus wants you to pay attention to. … And the fourth is getting neutral, which really means dying to self. That last one is very crucial because it’s very difficult for a lot of people to do.”
