Transgender Athlete Controversies Are Demanding Answer to Odd Question

Just a glance at the picture in the news report, in which Hubbard, the fourth from the left, dwarfs his competitors, would tell you something is not fair here.

Gavin Hubbard, who now goes by Laurel, is a male competing against females in weight lifting. His performance has sparked international controversy as observers decry the competition as unfair.

Hubbard’s case has one coach asking if athletics and sporting events should create a third category for competitions: Male, Female and Other.

“We all deserve the right to be on an even playing field,” the coach says. 

This is not the first time a transgender has won an athletic competition while competing as the sex opposite from the one into which they were born. Transgender wrestler Mack Beggs won a girl’s wrestling title in Texas last month, and a transgender cyclist took home the prize last November.
