What’s the meaning of life? Pastor Judah Smith says pop star Justin Bieber helped him answer that question.

“I think people would be surprised to discover that (celebrities’) challenges and struggles are not too dissimilar to us, average ordinary people,” Smith tells Fox. “We’re all looking for essentially the same thing and I think that’s faith and hope and love and meaning and, of course, satisfaction, peace, joy.”

Smith made the comments in regards to his new book, Life is ___.

Bieber attended Smith’s church—The City Church in Seattle—after Smith connected with Bieber’s mother, according to multiple reports.

“It’s probably one of the more honest pastoral relationships I’ve had,” Smith says of pastoring Bieber.

He’s come under fire for being in a relationship with the young man, who has come into trouble with the law in recent years.

“I consider it a real high privilege that people would criticize me or some of my friends for befriending, loving and caring for people who, you know, have made some mistakes, or in some cases publicly,” Smith says.

Charisma News previously spoke with the pastor about his book Jesus Is: Find a New Way to Be Human.
