American Idol contestant Colton Dixon was nearly in tears Wednesday night after his rendition of the song “Everything” by the Christian rock band Lifehouse.

Dixon, who is outspoken about his Christian faith, was first of the top nine finalists to take the stage that night.

He ended the performance on his knees, filled with so much emotion that he almost whispered the song’s last line, “Would you tell me how could it be any better than this.”

“What a way to start this show! I was really moved,” Jennifer Lopez said after the performance.

“I love that song, I love that band. I could see you doing music [like that],” American Idol judge Randy Jackson added. “I feel your heart and I feel you’re passionate in everything you do.”

Shortly after the performance, Lifehouse was a top trend on Twitter. Dixon fans shared their appreciation on his Facebook page.

“Best performance ever! You made me cry!” one person wrote. “Can’t wait to see God’s plan for you!”

“It is so nice to see a very ‘cool’ young man unafraid to fall to his knees to worship God and give of his talents in glorifying our Lord. God Bless You!” another said.

About four years ago, a skit based on Lifehouse’s song “Everything” went viral.

The skit, which acts out the power of God’s grace and forgiveness, has since been viewed more than 18 million times on YouTube. Several churches have also adopted their own versions of the performance.

In his Facebook bio, Dixon says he loves God, music and people.

He often shares Bible verses with followers, and thanks God for his experiences on American Idol.
