Cathedral to Host Beyoncé Mass, But There’s a Catch

A San Francisco-area cathedral will host a Beyoncé Mass later this month.

The Mass is meant to explore the singer’s lyrics and art, which “opens a window into the lives of the marginalized and forgotten—particularly black females.”

The Vine will host the mass at Grace Cathedral. The Vine SF is Grace Cathedral’s fresh take on Christian spiritual community, combining progressive worship, contemporary values and new connections, according to Facebook.

“We are not worshiping Beyoncé. A few media outlets have reported this in jest, and it’s been taken seriously by many,” the Vine, which is hosting the mass, posted to Facebook. “We worship God at Grace, and none other. As with ‘Bluegrass Mass’ and ‘Sister Act Mass,’ *the medium is not the message.* The medium is Beyoncé’s powerful songs, which give voice to Black female experience, exploring themes of spirituality, sexuality and agency.”

The Mass will consist of singing Beyoncé songs

The Vine’s post continues to say that the church has not done the best job of affirming black women are made in the image of God.

“Our worship is concerned with this question of justice because that’s what worship does—the closer we get to God the more aware we become of the need to heal broken places in our relationships with each other and with God,” the Vine says.

The Mass will be hosted April 25.
