How Holy Spirit Overcame Her Trafficker and Set Her Free

It happened right under her parents’ noses.

Fifteen-year-old Kathy would walk 10 blocks to her friend’s house after school each day. Along the way, she would talk to a man who appeared to be living in the neighborhood.

Over the course of a few months, Kathy became infatuated with the young man. When he asked her to go dancing, she excitedly agreed.

When he picked her up that evening, he didn’t take her dancing. Instead, he took her to his home where another man was waiting.

They raped her.

“When they were done, they just got up and went into the kitchen and started making sandwiches,” Kathy says.

For two years, the man would pick her up at night from her parents’ home, take her to homes, sell her for sex and deliver her back home before school started the next morning.

He told Kathy that if she tried to escape, he would hurt her baby sister, Cassandra.

And though Kathy was miserable, she knew Jesus, and can point to several miracles where the Lord protected her during this time.

“I also feel the way I got out was because of the Holy Spirit,” Kathy says. Kathy spoke with the Charisma News podcast recently for “The Truth About Human Trafficking” series.

Now, Kathy is a speaker, mentor and author. She has testified several times before the Arkansas Congress, resulting in the passage of three new laws, is a consultant for the Department of Homeland Security’s Blue Campaign, a member of both the National Survivor Network and the Survivor Leader Institute, and board member for Into the Light.

She is the operations and program director at the Rebecca Bender Initiative.
