Mary Colbert is setting up a nationwide network of intercessors to cover the world’s leaders in prayer. The new program, called Nation Builders, has 25 different leaders across the United States, and Colbert says it’s still growing.
The program started during the 2016 election. Colbert says years ago, she heard from a patient who had received a prophetic word: Donald Trump would become president.
“I personally immediately knew and believed it was a word from God,” Colbert said. “I really thought, in reading the details of it, this is so God. Because God is detailed, not general. And so I immediately became very excited about it, shared the word with almost every major minister in the country. I made copies and mailed it out to them, so that everybody would know that this was probably going to be the direction our Lord was going to take.”
But as the election progressed, Colbert received a second word from the Lord: “Mary, I’m going to do what I said I would, but if you think this is going to happen without prayer, you need to think again.”
This word spurred Colbert to find a way to unite the body of Christ in prayer. With the help of her son, she set up a prayer conference call. Every morning, at 9:00 a.m. EST, Christian leaders would lead people in 15 minutes of deliberate prayer for the nation, for the election and for wisdom for those in authority. Colbert says one conference call included 100,000 people. She said most morning, the calls were so full of participants that people who called on time—at 9:00—couldn’t even get in because the call was already packed.
“When God breathes on something and it’s Him, all you have to do is be obedient and do what He tells you to do, and He breathes on it and it takes off,” Colbert said. “There is no other way to explain it, how it took off. It took off in such a massive way that by the time we were coming to the end of the prayer, and of course our victory was ours, the next day I got inundated from people all over the country, thousands of calls and emails: ‘Please don’t stop it,’ ‘I’ve become used to this prayer every day.'”
This left Colbert in a difficult situation. She felt God had only instructed her to set up this prayer call for the time frame of the election.
“I can’t go beyond what God has told me to do,” Colbert said. “Even if people are pushing you, you can’t go past what God has told you to do. Because then you’re in the flesh, and you’re in sin. Now the people are pressing in. So I went back and said, ‘Father, what do you want me to do? All these thousands of people want to continue prayer.’ And all of a sudden, it was like, ‘Delegate it!'”
She invited leaders who were serious about continuing the call to set up a conference call in their own community. The leaders, dubbed Nation Builders, could set their own time for the prayer. Colbert says some Nation Builders have weekly calls, while others operate daily. And every leader is thoroughly vetted by the ministry before being given the Nation Builders platform. Twenty-five Nation Builders have already established regular prayer conference calls, and Colbert says more are being added.
Though the election is over, the prayer calls continue to focus on interceding for those in positions of authority. Colbert says that can be anyone from police officers and first responders to top-ranking politicians.
