This Makes Me Jump out of Bed in the Morning

In my very early days as a leader, I was taught a performance management system known as Management by Objectives (MBO).

The system has not gone away, but mention MBO in a corporate board room today, and the label “old school” will certainly be voiced.

General Patton summed it up clearly, “Don’t tell people how to do things, tell them what you need done and let them surprise you with their results.”

The second important feature of MBO is to have a meaningful measurement of results. Evaluation of performance is designed to be fact based.

Even though we may not use the label MBO today, much of what occurs in performance management remains focused on the two key principles of MBO.

The latest moniker for MBO is called “OKR,” Objectives and Key Results. So now, if I use the term OKR in a meeting, I’ll sound hip and new school.

The point remains: what matters most is setting objectives and achieving key results.

Objectives make me jump out of bed in the morning. Achieving key results keeps me energized and moving forward. Yesterday’s numbers mean very little in the face of continuous progress toward an objective.

As leaders, our focus must remain centered on objectives and key results.

I depend on the Holy Spirit to provide vision for the proper development of objectives and the guidance to achieve key results.

What’s born of the Spirit is spirit.
