Who Are You Receiving Counsel From?

I remember one of my dad’s favorite expressions about some of my expectations, “I wouldn’t bet the farm on it.”

Since I didn’t own a farm, I suppose this was his way of telling me that my plans weren’t likely to succeed. He didn’t mean it to discourage but rather to advise.

Leaders need to be wise about receiving counsel. Not all counsel is wise or even godly. Even counsel offered by brothers in the faith should be filtered through personal witness of the Holy Spirit. Proverbs 15:12 is very clear:

“Without counsel, purposes are disappointed, but in the multitude of counselors they are established.”

Vision given to leaders is rarely common. Spiritual leaders are gifted with a prophetic look forward for the organization he leads. This might include vision for projects, market conditions or perhaps even selection of employees.

If I am seeking God’s plan for organizational growth, the obvious methodology must include prayer and wise counsel.

So, wouldn’t it seem obvious to seek counsel from men and women who hear from God and have active prayer lives? How can we expect to receive counsel from God from someone who doesn’t pray “Thy will be done?”

If you have a question about the vision God has given you for your leadership, seek confirmation. Continue to diligently seek Him.

God rewards diligence.

When you seek Him you will find Him. You’ll keep the farm and cause it to prosper.

Platform Tip No. 70

Think about platform building as a system. In the beginning your system will be simple but powerful in execution.

Address your audience needs in the place where you can easily show up every every day. A starting place can be easy as email, blogging or daily messages on your favorite social media.

A simple system may look something like this:

  • Identify new people in need
  • Write your message to their need
  • Publish your answer in a place where your audience can find you
  • Do this every day (at least every weekday)

Don’t add to your system for at least one year.
