After 16 months away from her family, Justina Pelletier is back home—and speaking out.

In an exclusive interview with Mike Huckabee, Pelletier described her ordeal, in which she went from being a smiling, fit, 15-year-old ice skater to wheelchair bound in about a year.

“This should never happen again to anybody,” she told Huckabee in a weak voice.

The teen confirmed that while in state custody, not only was she only permitted one supervised visit with her family per week, but that she was only able to call her parents once per week, supervised, for 20 minutes—and the topics of conversation were limited to those the state agency approved.

“No one was on my side there. No one believed me there. Everyone told me I was faking,” Pelletier recounted.

Pelletier was originally admitted into Boston Children’s Hospital in early 2013 with symptoms of mitochondrial disease, an ailment which runs in the Pelletier family.

But when the medical staff decided that Pelletier’s symptoms were imagined, a supposed result of somatoform disorder, her parents spoke up—only to lose custody.

Massachusetts’ Department of Families and Children (DCF) got involved, taking the teenage girl from Lou and Linda Pelletier, and refusing to administer the correct treatment under shaky medical pretenses.
