Disney Slammed for Not Condemning Florida’s LGBTQ Bill

Walt Disney World was built on Florida swampland, but right now, it’s mired entirely in politics.

In late February, the Florida House of Representatives, controlled by Republicans, passed the Parental Rights in Education bill, which has been dubbed by the Left the “don’t say gay” legislation. If the state’s GOP-dominated Senate approves the bill and Gov. Ron DeSantis, also a Republican, signs it, it would “prohibit discussion about sexual orientation or gender identity in certain grade levels or in a specified manner.”

The bill would specifically bar classroom instruction on sexual orientation and gender identity by school employees or third parties, from kindergarten through third grade, according to the text of the legislation.

Enter Disney, whose sprawling Orlando-based resort and theme park complex drives much of the Florida economy. On the heels of the LGBTQ-centered bill’s passage, the Orlando Sentinel reported Disney has donated money to every lawmaker who sponsored or co-sponsored the legislation President Joe Biden condemned as “hateful.”

Walt Disney Company CEO Bob Chapek has been reticent to boldly condemn the Florida proposal, despite drawing intense ire from leftist groups like GLAAD, whose CEO Sarah Kate Ellis said companies like Disney need to speak out vociferously against bills like Florida’s Parental Rights Education legislation.

“Companies that do business in Florida, Texas and the dozens of other states considering anti-LGBTQ legislation not only have a responsibility to speak out for their LGBTQ customers and employees, they also have a real opportunity to educate the public about these unpopular and harmful bills and stop them from becoming law,” she said, according to the New York Post.
