Former President Donald Trump spoke at an Iowa rally over the weekend, coming short of a formal declaration of candidacy but giving clear signals of a potential bid for reelection in 2024. He teased the audience of thousands with his future campaign’s potential political slogan: “Make America Great Again, Again. Because we already did it,” per Business Insider.
Saturday’s speech at the “Save America Rally” at the Iowa State Fairgrounds in Des Moines was Trump’s first visit to the state since before the 2020 presidential election, per kcci.com.
A new Iowa poll via the Des Moines Register/Mediacom shows 53% of Iowans now view Trump favorably and 45% viewing him unfavorably, with 91% of Republicans in the state viewing him favorably. Biden, on the other hand, has a 37% favorable rating in the poll, while 61% of Iowans view him unfavorably.
C-Span covered the rally in its entirety, receiving criticism for promoting it as “campaign 2024,” Newsweek reports.
In his speech, Trump blasted President Joe Biden, saying Democrats are leading the country to the “brink of ruin” and adding, “We’re going to take America back.” He also urged Republicans to vote in the 2022 midterm elections, declaring, “We must send the left a message they will never forget.”
Despite his enthusiasm, Trump has yet to announce a formal run, repeatedly saying he would not launch a bid anytime soon because of “campaign financing regulations” that include laws about how he can spend and raise money, Newsweek reports.
