Cancel culture, which has become a huge part of the leftist agenda in America recently, is one thing. But to suggest a redesign of the American flag is simply another.
On Tuesday, the New York Times published an opinion essay that featured new designs to replace Old Glory, some of which, Fox News reported, “emphasized divisions and decline in the country.”
“The American flag is a potent piece of national iconography, but its design shifted frequently until the early 1900s. What if it were redesigned today,” the essay read. “We asked artists and graphic designers to try. Some are functional designs, others artistic renderings; some represent America as it could be, others how the artist sees the country now.”
The designs are part of The Times’ “Snap Out of It, America!” series, which it calls “bold ideas” on how to renew the American experiment.
One design, by an artist called 2×4, presents the American flag the way it is now, but completely blurred. The artist explains: “For nearly 250 years, the American flag has been made and remade, evolving from a unifying emblem into a complex and contested vocabulary of symbols. In this flag, the familiar symbolism falls out of focus, giving way to something ambiguous, vague and difficult to define.”
Which is exactly the way the left agenda—and cancel culture—wants the country to be defined.
Another artist, Andrew Kuo, designed a flag with four rectangles. One with red and white stripes, one all yellow, one all blue and one all green. The red stripes represent the past, the white stripes the future, wile the solid colors represent “untapped potential,’ “repairing systemic racism,” and “taking care of our planet.”
Kuo says, “I’ve designed a flag that acknowledges the emotions that informed where our country has been and the spirit of where it may go, with joy and forgiveness as possibilities. We can’t ignore how we got here, but maybe we can move toward a different, better place.”
Yet another artist, Na Kim, portrays a flag with stars on a gray background, seeming to lament the fact that the United States is long longer the strong country it used to be. The artist says “the colors of our flag are intended to stand for unity, valor and justice. The gray, monochrome flag represents America surrendering to its fall from power and loss of the ideals it once stood for. The American dream is being washed away.”
The New York Times piece met with both ridicule and praise on social media from conservatives and liberals throughout the country.
