The IRS has now granted tax-exempt status to Christians Engaged, a Texas-based nonprofit to which it had previously refused the 501(c)3 designation, First Liberty Institute announced. The reversal comes after a national outcry against the IRS’ initial rejection, which the government agency claimed came because “[B]ible teachers are typically affiliated with the [Republican] party and candidates.” Christians Engaged had filed for its status in 2019, only to receive a notice of denial from the IRS on May 18 of this year.
A group of Republican members of Congress and state senators demanded the IRS repeal the original decision, as Charisma News previously reported.
“This is truly great news for our client, as well as religious organizations and churches across America,” said Lea Patterson, counsel for First Liberty Institute. “We are grateful the IRS changed course to bring its decision into line with the Constitution and its own regulations.”
