Evangelist Born With No Arms or Legs Helps Veterans Shun Suicide and Heal From Trauma

If there’s anyone who knows anything about overcoming adversity and spiritual warfare, it’s Nick Vujicic. Vujicic, who’s been an evangelist since 19, was born without limbs but has overcome his physical adversity—by the grace of God—to preach the gospel around the globe.

Check out these numbers: Vujicic has preached Jesus in 74 countries to 9.5 million people face to face. During that time, 1.1 million have given their lives to Christ. Through two decades of his ministry, 733 million souls have heard the Good News of Jesus.

That’s pretty impressive if you ask me, especially considering his physical challenges. Those challenges, however, have never stopped his love for Jesus and his passion to see others’ lives transformed and healed by the power of the Holy Spirit.

Vujicic’s deep compassion for others has led him to found Unbound Warrior, an organization that helps veterans overcome obstacles and get healed from the traumas they have faced while serving in the military.

More than anything, however, the group aims to eliminate suicide—a very real problem that not many civilians are aware of—within the veteran community. As astounding as it seems, 22 veterans per day commit suicide in the U.S. every day, Vujicic says.

“Sadly, our ministry heard reports of that many veterans committing suicide each day, and that number has done gone down in the last 13 years,” Vujicic says on a recent edition of the Strang Report podcast on the Charisma Podcast Network. “Sadly, in 2014, when it became public of what we knew, my team and I were literally crying and saying, ‘Can we please help our veterans and warriors who fight for our freedom?’ Can we fight for them to fight for life, for their own hope in Jesus Christ?’

“As we engineered such an incredible program, the board said that this needs to be its own nonprofit,” Vujicic explains. “We had some problems before, but now we are relaunching the program. We see there are other veterans organizations that don’t help these guys with a lot of cash, and there is a lot of corruption. We want to refer people to organizations like UCLA’s Operation Mend, which gives free surgeries to veterans. There is another one that helps homeless veterans get into a condo and learn how to use their skill and passion in private security jobs with financial literacy.

“Secondly, we know that chaplains in the military are getting in trouble for preaching the gospel,” he says. “We have faith videos for veterans and the spouses and children of veterans that talk about 10 topics from combat to sexual abuse, PTSD, using trained psychologists and doctors. They talk about what happens from a medical point of view, testimonies of veterans that have gone through it and have been able to conquer it. And then they talk about it from a spiritual sense, about how God can reverse engineer in our hearts using Christian psychologists and the power of the Holy Spirit and the Bible. It’s the element that most nonprofits are shying away from.

“We really believe that Unbound Warrior will be the leading Christian veteran family-based nonprofit organization, hosting retreats for their families for healing and drawing closer to one another as families and close to God.”
