Moms for America® (MomsforAmerica.us), a national movement calling on moms to restore values such as motherhood, marriage, womanhood and patriotism, applauds President Trump’s decision to nominate Amy Coney Barrett to fill the vacancy on the Supreme Court left by the passing of longtime Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg.
Once confirmed, Barrett will be the fifth woman in history to serve on the Supreme Court, joining Justices Elena Kagan and Sonia Sotomayor on the bench. The last time a Republican president picked a woman for a seat on the Supreme Court was with Harriet Miers’ 2005 nomination.
“President Trump’s decision to nominate a strict constitutionalist underscores the fact that this is a constitutional battle, not a religious one, since the right to life is in the Constitution.” says Kimberly Fletcher, a mother of eight, and founder and president of Moms for America®. “You’re either for life or you’re for death.”
“The government can’t take away our divine inherent rights given to us by God (especially the right to life),” says Fletcher. “The Constitution protects these rights. We don’t look to the government for these rights. That’s the difference.”
In Moms for America’s new video, titled, Supreme Court Nomination is Critical for Moms, Fletcher outlines how urgent it is for the president of the United States to appoint a strict constitutionalist to the Supreme Court at this particular point in time. The battle lines have been drawn for quite a while.
“It’s literally evil and good clashing. The truth of everything that’s going on in our country is about to be unfolded…you’re going to get a clear picture of what it is we’re actually fighting and the evil that we really face,” Fletcher adds.
She’s talking about the extremist factions infiltrating many sectors of society in recent days, which “stem from women—feminists—radical feminists—and people that you think are seemingly normal everyday American women—completely losing it, shouting obscenities, saying, ‘We need to burn this country down,'” says Fletcher. “We’re not going to let this happen.
“It all grows out of the rage at the thought of losing the right to kill preborn babies. This is not a joke. And I am not exaggerating. We’ve already seen it. It’s all over Twitter. You need to understand that. And this Black Lives Matter movement that we’ve been seeing—these riots aren’t about Black lives. It’s about feminists using Black lives to push a political agenda that most Americans don’t want.”
Since President Donald Trump’s announcement at his recent rally in North Carolina that a woman will replace Justice Ginsburg, national attention has focused on his shortlist of potential Supreme Court Nominees, all of whom possess an impressive depth and breadth of expertise, which was narrowed down to three female frontrunners, all moms: Judge Amy Coney Barrett, Judge Barbara Lagoa and Judge Allison Jones Rushing.
At 48 years of age, Amy Coney Barrett, a devout Catholic mom, will be the youngest justice serving on the Supreme Court. A native of New Orleans, Louisiana, Barrett, the oldest of seven children, graduated from Notre Dame Law School at the top of her class. After serving as law clerk for the late Justice Antonin Scalia as well as other federal judges, she returned to her alma mater, where she served as a law professor for almost 20 years before serving on the 7th Circuit Court of Appeals for almost three years. During her 2017 confirmation hearings, Barrett’s Catholic faith drew sharp criticism and contention from Democrat senators. Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., addressed Barrett, saying “the dogma lives loudly within you” and even Sen. Dick Durbin, D-Ill., also a Catholic, asked Barrett if she was an “orthodox Catholic.” Barrett answered the objections by stating, “It’s never appropriate for a judge to impose that judge’s personal convictions, whether they arise from faith or anywhere else, on the law.” The Senate voted to confirm Barrett 55-43, with all 52 Senate Republicans and three Democrats voting in favor.
She is married to Jesse Barrett, a lawyer who formerly served as assistant U.S. Attorney in the Northern District of Indiana. The couple is raising their seven children, including two adopted from Haiti; their youngest has Down Syndrome. “What greater thing can you do than raise children?” Barrett asked. “That’s where you have your greatest impact on the world.”
Her short tenure on the bench makes it difficult to predict how she will rule. This is not without precedent, however. Both Chief Justice John Roberts and Justice Clarence Thomas were nominated despite having even less time under their belts as appellate judges, and Elena Kagan wasn’t even a judge before being nominated in 2009 by President Obama.
Barrett has said in the past that justices should not be strictly bound by past Supreme Court rulings, which makes people believe she may choose to overturn Roe v. Wade once seated on the court.
Fletcher is calling moms to the forefront to help get this nominee confirmed. “Now we are going to need to convince Republicans to vote for the nominee and urge Democrats to seriously consider what they’re doing.”
“We have a choice—to support the president of the United States and the Republicans in the United States Senate in confirming a constitutionalist judge who will protect and defend the constitution of the United States and our constitutionally protected right to life,” says Fletcher, “or we will step aside and say, it doesn’t matter to me.”
