Obama Undermines Marriage and Family With Brief on DOMA

The Obama administration filed a brief on Friday urging the Supreme Court to strike down the federal Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA).

Mat Staver, founder and chairman of Liberty Counsel, responds: “Marriage as the union of one man and one woman is the first foundation of a stable and healthy government. The federal Defense of Marriage Act affirms the commonsense definition of natural marriage as the union of one man and one woman. Same-sex unions would establish an irresponsible and dangerous policy that children do not need moms and dads.

“The Obama administration brief alleges that DOMA is discriminatory because it does not extend federal benefits to same-sex couples,” Staver continues. “President Obama and his administration have been the most hostile in American history towards marriage and the family. Obama’s radical policies will undermine marriage and morality and ultimately will harm children and society. Obama’s advocacy of anti-family policies is shameful.”

In an amicus brief filed last month, Liberty Counsel asked the Supreme Court to dismiss United States v. Windsor, the case homosexual activists are trying to use to overturn DOMA. The plaintiffs in that case lack standing to bring the suit.

Liberty Counsel has defended DOMA and the definition of marriage in almost 50 cases in state and federal courts. Mat and Anita Staver, president of Liberty Counsel, authored the Florida Marriage Protection Amendment, which passed in 2008 by a vote of 62.5 percent.
