That Time Ellen Couldn't Get into the White House

Leave it to a dyed-in-the-wool liberal to accidentally make the case for a conservative principle in the most hilarious way possible.

On Tuesday, actress, comedienne and talk show host Ellen DeGeneres was among those slated to receive the Presidential Medal of Freedom from President Barack Obama. In her haste to get to the White House on time for the event, she forgot her photo I.D.

No I.D.? No admission to the White House—even if you're Ellen.

She posted a photo while sitting on a bench outside the White House, waiting for a White House staffer to help her gain admission. The caption was: "They haven't let me in to the White House yet because I forgot my ID. #NotJoking #PresidentialMedalOfFreedom."

U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) won the Internet for the day with his quick-witted response, which also blew up Twitter for a few hours on Tuesday: "I thought Obama didn't like photo ID?"

Several of Ellen's other Twitter followers had the same thought, but not quite as eloquently articulated. She took most of the ribbing in good humor, and after receiving her medal, the talk show host tweeted: "@POTUS Barack Obama just awarded me the #MedalofFreedom. I hope it serves as an ID. I have no idea how I'm getting home."

Making the conservative case for using a photo I.D. when voting—unintentionally—not once, but twice, in a single afternoon? Priceless.
